Electronics giant LG has confirmed that it is going to launch a new smartphone in its ‘V series’ sometime in this quarter. Even though the company has not mentioned the smartphone in question, the LG V20 smartphone is widely expected.

LG released its financial earnings for the second quarter of 2016, and even though the smartphone unit of the company saw a total operating loss of roughly $132 million, it is hopeful of a better future. In its earnings statement, the company said, “Overall smartphone shipments increased 3 percent from the previous quarter with a total of 13.9 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter. The launch of the new V series and expanding sales of mass-tier K and X series models are expected to improve the business unit’s performance next quarter”.

While LG has not explicitly mentioned the smartphone that it intends to launch, past leaks hinting at a September launch for the LG V20 match the company’s statement. Its 2016 flagship LG G5 performed below expectations and the company would look to make up for the lost sales figures with the V20 smartphone.

Just to recap, the LG V10 was launched in October last year, and the smartphone’s big highlights were the secondary Always On display and the dual front camera setup. The smartphone came with two separate lenses that can capture standard 80-degree selfies or wide-angle selfies of up to 120 degrees.

Even though LG is struggling with its smartphone business, the company managed to rake in an overall operating profit of $501 million in the second quarter.

LG Display Co., a supplier of Apple’s iPhone screens, said Wednesday that it will invest KRW 1.99 trillion ($1.75 billion or roughly Rs. 11,768 crores) to produce flexible displays for smartphones, in a sign that more high-end smartphone makers may adopt flexible screens in the near future.

The South Korean company said mass production of flexible displays will start in late 2018, at a scale that will supply enough 5.7-inch sized flexible screens for 3 million handsets per month.

The flexible displays will be made of advanced materials called Oleds, or organic light emitting diodes, which display more saturated colors, such as a darker black, than LCDs.

While Apple still uses LCD screens for its iPhones, a growing number of mobile phone makers have adopted Oled screens for their flagship phones as they have resolved battery-draining and heat problems associated with the technology. Market watchers say even Apple might use the Oled screens for its iPhones as early as next year.

The Oled screen is lighter and thinner than other display screens and has more design flexibility. It can be folded and bended.

LG Display focused initially on investing in large-sized Oled screens for televisions while its small-sized screens were mostly made of LCDs to meet demand from its key clients, including Apple and its affiliated company LG Electronics.

With the latest investment, LG is trying to catch up with its rival Samsung Display in the small-sized Oled screens. Samsung dominates the supply of Oled screens for mobile phones. For years, Samsung Electronics used the Oled screens for its flagship Galaxy smartphones and recently it has adopted curved Oled screens for its Galaxy Edge series smartphones that feature displays that wrap around corners of the devices.

LG Display’s biggest client for mobile phones is Apple.

South Korea’s LG Display Co Ltd is seeing signs of improvement in the display panel industry and expects its business performance to pick up in the second half of the year, the firm’s chief executive said.

“There is a sign of things changing a bit starting in late second quarter,” LG Display CEO Han Sang-beom told reporters at an embargoed media event, without providing specific details.

“We are making various cost-related efforts and I think we’ll look a bit better in the second half.”

Panel makers have suffered from price declines in recent quarters due to weak sales of consumer electronics such as smartphones and televisions. But there are signs that the bottom is near, with panel prices for some televisions, tablets and monitors picking up in June, according to research house IHS.

The bottom could not come soon enough for LG, the world’s top liquid crystal display (LCD) maker, which is expected to post a 96 percent fall in April-June operating profit to KRW 18 billion ($15.72 million), according to the average forecast of analysts in a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S/ survey.

Lacklustre sales for key client Apple Inc’s iPhones have also hurt LG Display’s bottom line. The company will report its second-quarter earnings on July 27.

Han said flexible organic light-emitting diode screens were proving popular and LG Display was preparing to supply them to “major” Chinese clients for mobile products. He did not elaborate.

The company currently supplies such screens, mainly for smartwatches, to LG Electronics Inc and Apple.

“It’s clear that plastic Oled is a major trend. While the smartphone market has stagnated it is still a growth market, so we will focus on preparing capacity and developing products accordingly,” Han said.
