A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was allegedly shot dead in Malandighi Anchal under Kanksha block of West Bengal’s Durgapur.
The BJP has held the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) responsible for the killing.
As per reports, BJP worker Sandip Ghosh was returning home on the night of December 9 after attending a party meeting, when a man, believed to be a TMC worker, attacked him and shot him dead. Another BJP worker was injured in the attack and was admitted to the Mission Hospital in Durgapur.
“The TMC has lost its ground in the area and in order to break the morale of BJP workers, it killed one of our BJP workers,” BJP block leader Raman Sharma said, on Monday.
According to Sharma, there was a booth level meeting on Sunday evening in Saraswatiganj village of Malandighi Anchal of Kanksa block for the Shakti Kendra. He said that when the workers left post the meeting around 10 pm on a bike, TMC workers opened fire on them.
A bullet hit Sandip Ghosh on his head and he died on the spot. The bike rider fell in the sewer.
Police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Modi, later visited the area.
Heavy police cover has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The post-mortem of the dead body, which was scheduled to take place in a Durgapur subdivisional hospital, has been shifted to the Asansol district hospital eyeing tension in the area.
Bijay Ghosh, the father of the deceased BJP worker, said, “My son’s life has been sacrificed for political gains. I never knew he was going for a political programme. He is a college student. He left home saying he was going for a party. I had told my son to first finish his studies and then do what he wanted. I never asked him to join politics. The TMC has killed him. Who else will kill him?”
Ghosh’s father has expressed his anger against the BJP leadership for taking his son to the party meeting. He has also requested the party to provide his son’s body to him.
“I want a strict punishment for the accused. I asked them [BJP] why they took him for a party meeting inside the jungle. I just want his body, nothing else,” he said.
The TMC has, however, denied any involvement in the incident, calling the murder the result of a fight within the BJP for distribution of funds sent by Delhi.
TMC leader Uttam Mukherjee called the allegation “baseless”.
“This incident is the result of an inner clash in the BJP for the distribution of funds among them. The police will investigate the matter and the truth will come out,” he said.
Union minister and BJP leader Babul Supriyo, meanwhile, condemned the killing on Twitter. He is scheduled to visit the area.
